When Shawn and I found out we were pregnant we started brainstorming how we could tell people the gender when we found out. I love getting creative with things so I told Shawn that I wanted to do cupcakes that had the colored filling inside revealing what the gender is instead of just saying it. He agreed that it would be a fun way to tell and then said we should invite everyone over for a barbeque that weekend and tell them then. Little did he know that I would put a creative spin on it. When I told him all the ideas I had he laughed and asked me to try and keep it simple. (He didn’t let me soar on this one, but don’t worry one time I will go all out with a party for him and he will see just how fun things can be when you make them that way.)
The barbeque went really well. We invited our immediate family and close friends. We had a pretty good turn out except for a few friends and family that couldn’t make it. I will admit that I cried one night because my sisters (who would appreciate me making this announcement all fun and cutsie) couldn’t make it. Two of them live out of state and the other had already planned to go visit one of them that weekend. So I can’t really blame them, but my extra hormones kicked in for a little.
We had the barbeque two days after we found out the sex of the baby. It was really hard to keep it secret for that long! I almost blew it plenty of times. I started talking about the doctors appointment at work the next day and accidentally said the gender. They caught it so I just started laughing. I told them not to worry because by the end of the day I was going to have said both he and she plenty of times so that there was no chance of me slipping. If I do say so myself, it was a GREAT cover up. Through all of Friday I was exhausted so my co-workers took that as me being disappointed that I was having a boy not a girl. Yeah I was playing them pretty good.
Saturday was the big day and man was it exhausting. Shawn and I woke up around 8:30 and didn’t stop going until 9:30 that night. Shawn mowed the lawn and edged the yard while I started cleaning the house. We then spent two hours weeding the entire front yard (usually this takes us all day but we were weeding maniacs), which filled up a black garbage bag. After that we showered and got ready. Then Shawn and I split, he went and bought everything we needed while I finished cleaning the house. Once he got back we went and picked up tables and chairs from my parents house and dropped Meeko off. Then it was back to the house to start preparing the food and setting things up for the BBQ. Which was followed with the party and the clean up. I’ll tell you, I was EXHAUSTED! Shawn and I both were physically drained (I think speedy yard work was mostly to blame).
Everyone enjoyed the BBQ. It was good food and they couldn’t wait (due to all the anticipation) to find out what we were having. I had everyone write down on the chart whether they thought it was a he or a she. We also had a guessing game of how many blue and how many pink Sixlets we had in a jar. While everyone was eating, people kept asking, "well, what is it? When do we find out? I’m dying to know!" It was kind of fun torturing them.
I brought out the cupcakes and in my very excited way (which probably made people wonder what was wrong with me) asked if everyone was excited. We passed out the cupcakes and then when they were all passed out I gave the go ahead to bite in. IT’S A GIRL!!! My mom gave us (well the baby) a present. She had a blue bag and a pink bag. She gave us a little pink jacket and a really soft blanket with monkeys on it (I was kind of a monkey lover for a bit). It was adorable!
After the reveal, things wrapped up. People told us congrats and I will admit I said ha ha ha to Jesse (my brother in-law) who said he KNEW it was a boy. I know, a little tad immature, but I just had to.
As far as the doctor appointment goes, everything went great. She is a healthy normal baby measuring to the day exactly. I was a little shocked to hear that since the first ultrasound they said that we were a week behind from the calculations. I asked Shawn, “So does that mean that our baby girl is already growing faster than a normal baby?” It probably doesn’t mean that, but with Shawn being 6’7” and I being 6’2”, it just makes me worried that our little girl will be even taller than me.
That aside, when the ultrasound lady (Mary Ellen) said, “and there is your little princess” it took me a minute to realize that that meant girl. I was overjoyed. I was laying on the table and I threw my fists in the air. And then the tears started. (I’ll just keep blaming it on pregnancy hormones, never mind that I was a bawl baby before.) She is already the cutest little thing I have ever seen and that means a lot. I mean on the ultra sound (3D image) it looks like half of her head is missing. She has already stolen our hearts and she mesmerized me. I laid there watching the screen and had a constant tear running down my face (only from the right eye hehe). “She is so cute!” I kept saying and Mary Ellen kept agreeing with me while Shawn laughed in the corner.
After the ultrasound was done we met with our doctor for a little check up. So far I have gained five pounds total (last appointment was 1.4) and he said a healthy amount for me to gain would be 25 pounds. I said 25 pounds!? He asked if I thought that was too much and Shawn laughed and said “Anything above what she already is, is too much for her.” The doctor then proceeded to explain to me that you have the weight of the baby, the sack, the fluid and swelling. I reluctantly accepted it and then asked Shawn after we left, how come I can’t just gain the weight of the baby and then once it’s born tah-dah, normal weight? I just need to keep being careful with how I eat and I should be okay, fingers crossed.
